EA reveals Battlefield 2042 with first trailer - 128 players, new game modes, tornadoes, and more

EA has revealed the next Battlefield game with an action-packed first trailer that you can find below. The game is called Battlefield 2042 and is therefore set in the near future.

The trailer below shows off different weaponry and high-tech military gear as well as vehicle types. The game is set to have larger maps, new game modes, and also new forms of levolution (natural disasters or unpredictable weather changes, like the tornado, that can change the battlefield). The game also offers destructible buildings, walls, trees, and other cover that can alter the map in a dynamic way.

The player count will be increased from 64 players to 128 players on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. For PS4 and Xbox One the game will stick to the 64 player limit. DICE has also removed the limit to certain loadouts depending on which of the ten specialist classes you chose. There are still special abilities for each character but players can choose from all of the guns which can now be customized on the go with different scopes, barrels or attachments. As for the vehicles, players will be able to call in tanks, jets, helicopters, or jeeps from an in-game tablet.

There are a three multiplayer experiences in the game on the largest maps in the history of the franchise. The first one is called All-Out Warfare which features the Conquest and Breakthrough game modes known from previous games. The second one is called Hazard Zone which heavily relies on communication with your squad. DICE stressed that Hazard Zone is not a battle royale mode. The last mode, which is a "love letter to Battlefield fans and long-time players", is in development at DICE LA and will be revealed at a later date - probably during the EA Play live event on July 22.

There will be no single-player campaign but all of the seven multiplayer maps offer the option to play against AI enemies. The locations of the maps are set all over the world: South Korea, India, Singapore, Qatar, Antarctica, Egypt, and French Guiana.

Players can get access to new specialists, weapons, locations, and cosmetics in the game's battle pass which DICE will offer for each season, both with free and premium items. Buying the battle pass will not give you advantage of having better weapons though. All players will get the same maps, weapons, and specialists, only some of the cosmetic items are locked behind a paywall. That is the only difference between the free battle pass and the premium battle pass.

In July, Players can get their hands on the game for the first time during a technical test which is invite-only. There will be more opportunities to check out the game later this year like an open beta for the Hazard Zone mode and the other game modes.

The first gameplay trailer will be revealed on June 13.

Battlefield 2042 launches on October 22 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
