Activision and Treyarch released details about the multiplayer mode at gamescom 2012.
Treyarch announced that the multiplayer portion will not be set in the ’80s era. It is only set in 2025, according to game design director David Vonderhaar from Treyarch. He explained that the focus on the future setting gave his team a bigger sandbox to play with, so the devleopment team created 100 pieces of kit, new Score Streak rewards and several gadgets. There won't be Call of Duty points in the multiplayer mode like the ones in the first Black Ops game but there will be medals. But there will be a prestige system as well as a levelling system with 55 standard character levels/ranks and ten prestige ranks.
If the player levels up he gets one unlock token. 100 items to be unlocked but players won’t get them all because the player can choose from a range of options which fit to the players playstyle. If you wan to unlock everything you need multiple prestige levels. Unlockable items are score streaks, wildcards, weapons and equipment.
