Infinity Ward talks about skipping the Modern Warfare setting in Call of Duty: Ghosts

The developer also discussed the advanced engine of the shooter.

Infinity Ward has confirmed that while the game’s enhanced engine is mainly focused on the next-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One, many of its new innovations will appear on PS3 and Xbox 360 as well.

Infinity Ward’s executive producer Mark Rubin said: “The new engine actually also applies to current-gen. We didn’t mention that, but I do want to say that the new engine does affect current-gen. We do get a lot of benefit from this new engine on current-gen; lots of improvements to visual fidelity, but on next-gen we’ve got to bring in this new tech – a lot of it geared to stuff we’ve been seeing already in pre-rendered CG.”

Rubin announced that players can ‘customise’ singleplayer levels, which will involve creating sub-missions and different story twists.

He also spoke about skipping the Modern Warfare setting and creating a one with Ghosts. Rubin said the decision to branch off from the series was a “long decision,” but not a hard one.

“We don’t get a chance when making a game to think about the next one until we are done actually making that first game. When we finished Modern Warfare 3, we had this big brainstorming session that lasted for weeks. Everybody gets to come up with ideas of what we want to do, not just what game we want to do, but moments in games.”

“We all really knew we wanted to continue making Call of Duty. We could have done something else, but we wanted to make Call of Duty, and we wanted to create a new universe, or a new story at least. We wanted new characters and new experiences.”

“The easy thing would have been – as we had finished the arc of Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 – to start a new arc within that same universe. That was the first step. But due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare.”
