Wie die Spieleseite Gamasutra berichtet, könnte das kommende Call of Duty von Entwickler Sledgehammer Games das erste Spiel der Reihe sein, in dem der Spieler den Planeten Erde verlässt und in die Rolle eines Space Marines schlüpft. Das ist nicht der erste Hinweis darauf, dass die Fans in Zukunft ein ungewöhnliches Spiel der Marke erwarten dürfen.
Vor einiger Zeit versprach Thomas Tippl, Chief Operating Officer bei Activision, dass das neueste Call of Duty die Zielgruppe der Marke erweitern würde. “Today, we have three studios working on Call of Duty,” said Tippl. “We have Infinity Ward, which made Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Then we have Treyarch, which will be releasing a Call of Duty game in the fall of 2010. Treyarch also developed Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 3. And, most recently, we’ve added Sledgehammer in the Bay Area. We haven’t yet announced the content of their game, but it’s going to be an innovative take that will further broaden the audience for Call of Duty.” so Tippl.
Laut Glen Schofield, CEO bei Sledgehammer Games und Schöpfer von Dead Space, soll das kommende Spiel "ziemlich ungewöhnlich" werden - ob er damit Space Marines meint, ist unklar. “We haven’t looked back once,” sagt er. “I had a great time at EA, we made some excellent games, and I’m proud of the work we accomplished there. Activision offered us the opportunity to start a studio from scratch, create the culture, hire the team and build a state of the art game making facility. Instead of inheriting an existing studio like I did with Visceral, we were now able to create a brand new space, and more importantly, a new culture.” Außerdem soll das Spiel seiner Meinung nach "einzigartig" werden. Schließlich sei es das erste Spiel des Entwicklers, den es erst seit 2009 gibt. Früher war Glen Schofield Chef von EAs Visceral Games und ist jetzt Chef des neuen Entwicklers unter Activision.
Vorher wurde noch darüber spekuliert, ob das neue Call of Duty ein Action-Adventure oder ein First Person Shooter wird. Hoffentlich gibt es bald handfeste Infos.
